  • Two New Songs (and one old one)

I've put two new songs out on here (song18 and Untitled) as well as the very first song I created using Reason 3.0...Sparks. Let me know what you think! And I need a title for the new ones as well...any suggestions?

Happy November everyone! Let no-shave begin!

    New Paint.NET album and more!

I've got a new batch of images (created from scratch as well as edited) out on facebook, for your viewing pleasure. If you care to take a look then click here! In my humble opinion it's the best stuff I've done...as well as the most recent.

In other news there was a murder in Bolivar. The craziest thing about it all is that they found the body a football stadium's length from Maupin Hall...I pass that parking lot every day when I go to class.

And there's an Ultimate Frisbee league starting up. Games start next week, and I'm pumped! After 3 years of lobbying Student Life to do it, they finally get their act together and we're off! :)

Two new songs are almost completed. Still don't have titles though...we've got a slow one and a fast one. Mmm...variety!

St. Louis this weekend...good times will be had by all!

    Later.

    The Long-Awaited (Home) Coming

    Last two weeks. Ready...GO!

Here's a picture of right before Sprit Chapel this year. Maupin's chant was "My Little Buttercup" from The Three Amigos...with the lyrics changed a bit to reflect our love for our dorm.

    maupin_spiritchapel

Ah...Homecoming last year was pretty awesome. Some of you might remember the Maupin Beauty Pagent last year...this year I returned to help host it with Andy Hansome...er...Hanson. While it was a fun time...and I freaked a lot of people out...NEVER AGAIN. Wilma Wonka has reached retirement. ;)

    hosts

The contestants were good...not as many as last year but pretty stinkin' funny! This year's winner was "The Lunchlady". Sloppy Joes indeed...

    beauty pagent contestants

Building the float this year was a lot of fun. Some people had more fun than others...

    alter-ego

Building the float took from 7:00 PM on Friday night until 5:30 Saturday morning. It's a tradition of ours to start the float the night before the parade. Maupin's tradition of never following the theme also still stands true. The theme was "There's no place like SBU Homecoming...follow the purple brick road." Lame, eh? So who knows what float we're building? Any guesses?

    float_wip

That's right...a stinkin' dragon! Complete with teeth, horns, wings, a tail, and smoke coming out of his mouth. We actually had to add that last part during the parade. In true Maupin fashion, we stopped for a moment, popped open the hood, attached the power converter, and hooked us up some smoke!

    float

    Good times, great oldies!

    Random thoughts:

    • Scratch Track is a really good group. They played during Homecoming Week and they were actually pretty good in my humble opinion! Can't say the same for the band that opened for them though...
    • Curses on my professor for scheduling all sorts of Senior Project events during Homecoming Week...thankfully I survived. Even though I'm pretty sure I had some residual makeup on (from the Beauty Pagent) when I helped present our senior project to some company reps...
    • My room desperately needs to be vacuumed. Any takers?
    • Watched Forrest Gump on TV tonight. Good movie.
    • Got to see all sorts of people the last two weeks that I haven't seen in a while. All good times.
    • I think I'm completely "social-ed out." Nothing some sleep and video games can't fix...
    • I used to think about the future as if it'd never happen to me. Now that the future is appearing in the present, I'm not quite sure how to take it.
    • "You had my heart...where was my head?" Sean Lea is amazing...I have a newfound respect for the guy. Check out his band Time of Favor sometime.
    • Improv comedy. Always funny...especially with friends. :)
    • Never try and volunteer someone else during an improv comedy show. They invariably pick you...
    • I've become far behind in my homework...senioritis has set in. Along with a healthy dose of apathy. I should probably get over that, but right now I just don't care...
    • One of my new songs is nearing completion. I'll try and put it out here soon and see if I can get some of you wonderful people to tell me what you think. :)

    Rich out.

    Random Thoughts at the Moment

    - New theme. Don't look too much into it...I'm not depressed. I just thought it looked cool.

    - New Paint.NET pictures coming soon...I've done a lot since I posted the last album.

    - Rainy days are not fun. Especially when you have to dress up for Ethics & Professional Development.

    - Brawl Behind the Hall is next week. As well as the Maupin Beauty Pageant, float-building, and Homecoming. Should be interesting!

    - This "posting-every-other-day" thing I was trying to do is pretty hard when life intervenes.

    - I think last night was the first night in a week I got to bed before 3 AM. I've been staying up til 5 too much recently. Oh well...it usually tends to be worth it.

    - Hanging out with Jessie and Slug was not only the highlight of my weekend...it was my weekend. Got to expose the city girl to Bolivar...it was interesting. But in a good way. :)

    - Hanging out with Jessie and Amanda was not only the highlight of the weekend before...it was the weekend before. Got to expose the small town boy to St. Louis...it was interesting. But in a good way. :)

    - I'm pretty sure that as much as God is sitting in heaven weeping over the state of the earth, he's weeping over the state of the church more. Maranatha.

    - Paintball is awesome!

    - Lately some personality flaws of mine have become glaringly evident. Someone find me some shades.

    - Got a 94 on my Business Law test. It kinda made me feel good. Not gonna lie...

    - Flag football is fun...especially when we have a good quarterback. Makes catching touchdown passes much easier... ;)

    - In Ethics & PD today, the speaker talked about human resources and ethics...and I couldn't help thinking about what life is going to be like when I graduate. Not ready for it but I suppose I'll adjust.

    - The amount of facebook applications is ridiculous. I finally have so many invites to join applications that I now have to scroll down the page to see the end of the list. To celebrate, I want everyone to invite me to as many applications as they can...I'll see how many I can accumulate!

    - Eating nothing but burgers and fries for dinner may not be the healthiest thing to do, but it's oh so tasty.

    The Sweetest Pad

A lot of people have asked me..."hey Rich, what's your room look like?" Okay, only a few people asked. OKAY...it was my mom. Just kidding...but I decided that since tonight was visitation at the dorms, this is the cleanest my room is going to look. So here goes!

The first thing you see when you come to my room is the door.

    DSC00648

It's got a few lovely ornaments...such as the "DANGER" sign (for those who haven't heard about me) to two signs given to my by my sister Susan, reading "funny, you don't look rich" and "I wish I was rich instead of so good-looking!"

    DSC00649

As you open the door...voila! My room!

    DSC00650

Turning to your left and looking down...pay attention ladies...I have three pairs of shoes. THREE. One pair of sandals, one pair of everyday shoes, and one pair of athletic shoes. THAT'S ALL YOU REALLY NEED...

    DSC00651

Looking slightly upwards, you see the mandatory Burger King crown. It's used in one of our dorm's traditions...I'll leave you to figure out which one.

    DSC00652

Finally, walking forward you see a very artsy shot of my bed...as well as the dresser that I beat mercilessly in the morning to shut off the alarm.

    DSC00653

A slightly stylish, veeeery low couch occupies the center of the room. It's very comfortable.

    DSC00654

At the end rests a gun. Um...that's all.

    DSC00655

Following the room around to the front of the couch reveals...um...some cords. And stuff.

    DSC00656

If you ever have the privilege of sitting down on my couch, this is what you will see. This is exactly what you will see actually...since my TV is on the fritz and won't even turn on at the moment. :(

    DSC00657

    The drink of champions!!!

    DSC00658

This is probably where I spend most of my time. As well as where I'm typing this right now. Don't worry about the Blue Screen of Death...it's actually a screensaver that I've gotten many strange looks with. :)

    DSC00659

Over to the right of the computer you have the mandatory lamp (my dorm is not air-conditioned) as well as a lamp that I used over the summer. While it was all sorts of useful then...now not so much. Perhaps I'll plug it in someday and use it for some ambient lighting or something.

    DSC00660

To the right of that is the keyboard that I use for making all sorts of sweet music. Underneath, a foot pedal and an instrument of a different sort...one that I use to "buff out" every evening.

    DSC00661

To the right of the keyboard is my sink. Which is incredibly boring, so I skipped it. But hanging above my sink is an awesome necklace given to me by a good friend. And if I was viewing this right now...I'd probably wonder what all the cord wrapped around the light is for. I mean...my dorm is kinda ghetto, but not THAT ghetto...right?

    DSC00662

In all actuality, it's some blue rope lights, that look wicked awesome with the light off. They extend all the way around the room...

    DSC00663

which is constantly cooled by the fan that is never turned off. Remember children, no air-conditioning equals hot room.

    DSC00664

    And there you have it!

Well, dropped my first class today. Signed up for Competitive Programming on a whim, and decided that it's really not as fun as last year and I don't need the credit. This summer has made me realize that I'm really more interested in making existing solutions better and look nicer. My internship spoiled me to being able to write good code, rather than fast code. I think the emphasis on speed this semester is not quite my thing. Why rush goodness? I mentioned this to Dr. DeClue today, and he told me that a few competitions have web-development categories. Perhaps I'll get into that. I really like making end-users happy and making things work the way they're supposed to. Hopefully I'll end up doing that for a living.

Also met with our senior project sponsor from Jack Henry today. It was an interesting meeting because I would keep thinking "oh he reminds me a little of this guy, and a little of that guy, and a little of a serial killer." (I made that last part up.) But Mr. Severheart...er...I mean Mr. Everhart seems like a pretty cool guy! And he was able to make our senior project a lot clearer. I'm looking forward to starting actual work on it soon.

I know what most of you are thinking. Too much computer science stuff. I agree. And now for something...completely different.

    Ode to Ultimate Frisbee

I don't think I've ever felt as alive as I do when I play ultimate frisbee. Tonight was incredible. We played three games against three good teams. Even though we came out 1-2, the two that we lost were both 8 and 10 I believe. All of the teams were pretty evenly matched, luck just happened to swing one way tonight. And I couldn't be happier with the way everyone played. It was just a great time all around!

I don't know how I'm going to survive after college without people to do this stuff with.

    Team sports. Rock. Hardcore.

Although the new non-contact rules for flag football are pretty bad. Contact on the line is no longer allowed (right after we finally get some big guys on the team!) and after touchdowns you can go for a 1, 2, or 3 point conversion. 3 point conversion?!? That's un-American!!! </rant>

And finally, as a random side note...I was cleaning out my phone to take some pictures (of my room...ssssshhhh...it's a future post) and found a very artsy video my sister Christina took a while back. Watch it and then read the explanation below:

She was playing around with my phone and caught me when I was playing around with the piano one day. Apparently she was trying to make it look like I was sad about the recent death of my wife (also known as the girl in the photos...also known as my other sister, Susan). Chrissy, you rock! :)

(P.S. I'm working on a couple new songs. This makes me happy. I'll post them here when I'm finished with them! Stay tuned!)

    My room and such

It's been a while since I've blogged about anything of note. And while I'd like to blame that on being busy with my internship this summer and only having internet for a short time at work...the truth is I've been a little bit on the lazy side. I see a lot of people on a daily basis and have neglected those who may not share each day with me. So I'm going to try and write something every other day here. Which may last a while, and may not...depends on whether I remember that I made this resolution tomorrow...

    Ah, drugs. ;)

No seriously, I was sick on Monday...probably something I ate. And it's way too late...perhaps tomorrow I'll do something interesting!

No really! I promise! My excuse:

    Sleep - By Anthony Silvestri

The evening hangs beneath the moon
A silver thread on darkened dune
With closing eyes and resting head
I know that sleep is coming soon

Upon my pillow, safe in bed,
A thousand pictures fill my head,
I cannot sleep, my minds aflight,
And yet my limbs seem made of lead
If there are noises in the night,
    A frightening shadow, flickering light...

    Then I surrender unto sleep,
Where clouds of dream give second sight
What dreams may come, both dark and deep
Of flying wings and soaring leap
    As I surrender unto sleep
    As I surrender unto sleep.
